Frequently Asked Questions

Faq Question Image
We are happy to answer any questions you have regarding your endodontic care.

What is an endodontist?

An endodontist is first a general dentist who then undergoes an additional two to three years of specialty training that focuses only on endodontic procedures. Their additional training focuses on diagnosing tooth pain, performing root canal treatment and other procedures relating to the interior of the tooth. While all endodontists are dentists, less than 3% of dentists are endodontists. In addition to the years spent in advanced training, Dr. Hernandez is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Less than 25% of endodontists in the nation have completed the rigorous process to achieve board certification.

How many appointments will it take?

Most endodontic treatments take one or two visits to complete. The cost does not change depending on the number of visits required.

Do root canals hurt?

This is a common misconception — the short answer is no. Dr. Hernandez will ensure you are fully numbed throughout the procedure, ensuring a comfortable and positive experience for you.

I'm worried about x-rays. Should I be?

During your endodontic treatment, x-rays are essential for accurate diagnosis and care. We use advanced digital radiography—a modern, non-film computerized system—that reduces radiation exposure by up to 90% compared to traditional low-dose dental x-ray machines. The American Dental Association (ADA) no longer recommends the routine use of lead aprons, as modern technology directs x-rays precisely and minimizes exposure to surrounding areas, making them safer than ever.

When to see an endodontist?

  • Pain and sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Pain while chewing or biting
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Facial swelling or dental abscess
  • Swelling or a bump around the tooth
  • Trauma to the teeth

Do I need a referral to schedule?

Though most patients are referred to our office by their general dentist, we are more than happy to schedule an appointment without a referral.
Give us a call- we look forward to meeting you!

Will my insurance cover the cost?

Each patient’s insurance plan varies depending on the contract that you signed with your insurer. Our team will be happy to assist you in filing your claim so that you can maximize your benefits.

Do you offer anything to help with anxiety during treatment?

We offer oral sedation to help you feel calm and comfortable during your procedure. If you think you may need this, please let us know before your appointment. We do not offer nitrous oxide.
