Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat inflammation or infection inside a tooth. It involves removing the infected pulp (soft tissue inside the tooth), cleaning and disinfecting the inner space, and then filling and sealing it to prevent further infection. This helps save the natural tooth and relieve pain.
Benefits of endodontic treatment include:
1. Prevents spread of infection
You can prevent dental abscesses from worsening by having a root canal completed.
2. Relieves tooth pain
A root canal alleviates a toothache by removing decayed or infected structures
3. Preserves your natural tooth
Endodontic treatment helps to restore the health and functionality of your natural tooth, thus avoiding the need for an extraction.
The Root Canal Process
Consultation
During your consultation, your endodontist will use advanced diagnostics, including 3D CBCT imaging, to evaluate your condition and explain treatment options and expected outcomes. If treatment can begin the same day, we’ll get started right away-otherwise, we’ll schedule it at a convenient time for you.
Disinfection and Filling
Once you are profoundly numb and at ease, your endodontist will carefully remove the inflamed/infected tissue. Using a state of the art microscope, a small, precise opening will be made to access your root canal system. The canals will be sealed with bioceramic materials and gutta-percha. To complete the procedure, a temporary filling will be placed on the chewing surface of the tooth.
Follow Up
Once your root canal treatment is complete, we recommend seeing your general dentist within 30 days to place a permanent filling or crown. This final step is important to protect your tooth against fractures.
