While initial root canals have a 95% success rate, some cases can require retreatment due to recontamination, missed canals, persistent discomfort or other anatomical complications. The dentist reopens the tooth, removes the old root canal material, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the canals.
The Root Canal Process
1. Consultation
During your thorough consultation, your endodontist will use advanced diagnostic imaging (including 3-D CBCT scans) and clinical findings to present you with treatment options and prognoses.
While some treatments can commence on the same day as your consultation, a more intricate medical history or treatment plan may necessitate additional evaluation and follow-up appointments.
2. Disinfection and Filling
You will be numbed with local anesthesia. Once you’re comfortable and fully anesthetized, your endodontist will eliminate the infection. Through a state-of-the-art surgical microscope, your endodontist will atraumatically create a small hole to allow for disinfection of the inside of your tooth Upon completion of this thorough disinfection process, the canal spaces will be sealed.
3. Follow up
Once your root canal therapy is complete, we recommend you follow up with your general dentist within 30 days for a permanent filling or restoration. At Riverview Endodontics, we follow up with our patients one year after the procedure completion to ensure your tooth has returned to full functionality and comfort.
